Chekhov described Uncle Vanya, written in 1897, as a work consisting of ‘scenes from country life in four acts’. The play, a comedy shot through with notes of sadness, is set around the estate of emeritus professor Alexander Serebryakov, and charts the changing lives of the inhabitants of this rural backwater. This will be the third Merton Floats garden show since the tradition was revived in 2008. Please e-mail us at russian.oxford@googlemail.com to reserve a ticket at the discounted price of £4, with further discounts possible if many of us go!
